Porsche Bargains - The Top 5

Porsche Bargains - The Top 5

Introduction

As a premium automotive brand, Porsche's prices have always reflected the performance, engineering, and reputation this company has enjoyed. Although never as insanely expensive as some of its Italian counterparts, Porsche models were always a bit pricy. Unfortunately, gone are the days when air-cooled 911 could be had for a couple of thousand pounds, and today, every bona fide Porsche classic demands lofty sums of money. However, Porsche's lineup features many models and versions, and there are still some attractive bargains to be found. No, we are not talking about suspiciously cheap, neglected cars with hidden problems and alarmingly high repair bills. We are talking about regular and roadworthy Porsches that can be driven anywhere. So, here is our take on the top 5 Porsche bargains you should consider.

Porsche Cayenne

The Cayenne was an immensely controversial model when it came out in 2002, but it soon became one of the best-selling Porsche cars ever with its exciting blend of recognizable styling, fantastic performance and SUV practicality. The first generation was sold to almost 280,000 customers, meaning they are plentiful and affordable. For example, a decent Cayenne S with a 4.5-litre V8, 340hp, luxurious interior, and 12-month MOT can be had for under £3,500 (GBP). Although 20 years old, the first-generation Cayenne is still a capable and spacious vehicle. You get a lot of car for your money. Those who fear high fuel costs can also opt for the diesel version, and the cheapest 3.0-litre TDI Cayenne will set you back about £6,500 (GBP). As a bonus, the first-generation Cayenne is not afraid to get muddy either! It’s not a dedicated off-roader, but it can hold its own when the tarmac stops.

Porsche 912E

For the majority of Porsche fans, air-cooled 911s are the essence of the brand, and we agree. Most classic car dealers thought the same and drove the prices of the classic 911s to the point where the cars were just out of reach. Before you decide to wait for the market crash, if it ever happens, there is a way for you to enjoy the classic, air-cooled 911 model without paying a fortune for the privilege. Search for the 912E from the mid-70s, a short-lived economy model. Powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with just 86hp, the 912E looks like the Porsche 911 and sounds like the Porsche 911, but its performance is more like the classic Volkswagen Beetle. If this doesn't bother you, you can find a decent example of this rare version of 911 (less than 2,100 made) for under £30,000 (GBP). Yes, it is still quite a bit of money, but it is a fraction of what you would pay for any other 911 of the era.

Porsche Panamera

For family-oriented Porsche fans, the Panamera is a very tempting car. The prices of the first-generation models (2009 to 2016) start at just under £10,000 (GBP), and for a couple of thousand pounds more, you can get a seriously fast and capable Panamera S, powered with 4.8-litre V8, all-wheel-drive and 400hp on tap. The Porsche Panamera was constantly revered for its spacious interior, massive power and luxury features. It is the perfect Autobahn cruiser for people who need the 911 with four doors. Some brand purists argued that the Cayenne is not as engaging to drive since it is a luxury SUV, but the Panamera never received such criticisms. It is the ultimate Porsche family express with massive power and all-wheel-drive grip. There is also a diesel version available, and this is a perfect balance between performance and frugality.

Porsche Boxster 986

The first-generation Porsche Boxster (986) was an immensely important model for the company. It has introduced new design language and engine technology and helped the brand survive the late '90s with its fantastic market success. Sure, its specs might look underwhelming now, but rest assured, even the 201hp base model can deliver an exciting ride, plenty of driving dynamics and that raspy, six-cylinder sound Porsche is known for.  That is why the Boxster 986 is the most suitable and affordable entry into Porsche ownership. Prices start as low as £3000 (GBP), but you’re better off stretching the budget a little further. You’ll get a far better car above £5000 (GBP).  However charming and affordable the Boxster 986 is, it is not without its issues. We suggest checking our Boxster 986 buyers guide to find the best one.

Porsche 944

The 924 and 944 models mark an exciting period in Porsche's history and are often overlooked by modern collectors. The 924 came first, but we would suggest considering the 944 since it is a more refined, modern and faster model. Introduced in 1982 and sold through to 1991, this was a highly-regarded sports car of its day, with lightweight, precision steering, and sufficient power from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The pop-up headlights and that timeless 80s styling are one of the reasons why the collector's car market is again starting to notice the Porsche 944. The prices for base-line models are very affordable and start at just under £4000 (GBP).  For later, S or S2 models expect to pay more. If you are interested in the Porsche 944, invest in its pinnacle, the 944 Turbo. Yes, the prices will be significantly higher (£15,000+), but the 944 Turbo is guaranteed to be an exciting drive and sound investment. We cover all of these models in our dedicated Porsche 944 buyer's guide.
